TRANSFORMATIVE ART + HEALING

CREATIVE PROCESS

I am often asked about the creative process behind my artistic work, my healing art, and my philosophy of teaching. I have come to the conclusion that what drives me is the need to explore, innovate, discover, and share. I love nothing more than to share my own experiences, my understandings, and my ever-changing truths with fellow art lovers, truth seekers, and self-healing heroes of mine. My creative mode is “breaking the rules.” Whatever you think is final, look further. Whatever is true, look deeper. Whatever is expected, do differently. And if you think you have arrived, you were not going very far.

When I first started painting, after a fifteen-year career as a graphic designer and AD, and as I was opening up to spirituality, I became fascinated with the oil painting medium, which I had never experimented with in art college. I studied every other medium but this one. I approached it with great innocence. No teacher had left their imprint on me regarding oil painting. My first approach was more about mastering the paint through familiar visuals: close-ups of folds of fabrics. I had done a lot of stylist jobs for photography. I fell in love with the interpretative and meditative nature of the fabric playing with light, mixed with the creativity of the fashion world. This theme was very satisfying; I referred to this first work as “my Abstracts,” slightly ironically because the rendering was very realistic.

Then came the stories that needed to be told. From behind the curtains emerged some presences—feminine, evanescent, and mysterious. Their presence became more central. Are they female archetypes, goddesses, saints, self-portraits, or teachers? It took me decades to understand most of my paintings. They serve as a space of learning for me, akin to a vortex created for my psyche to receive symbolic messages that I must learn to interpret. Now, my interpretation evolves continuously and is often enriched by the interpretations of others.

People also often ask me if I have a clear idea of what I’ll paint. The truth is, I don’t. I typically start with a central character or element, and from there, inspiration guides me along the journey as I paint. I discover afterward the meaning of each element, which is always purposeful. I knew I wanted my work to be symbolic without being too obvious. I wanted subtlety in the messages conveyed.
